Hello, my name is Alan Hughes and I would like to tell you about C.C.M.A.
(Connect With Chi Martial Arts)
Firstly, a little bit about myself.
As a youngster living in Birmingham, West Midlands, I used to play football and rugby Union at school and then I got a taste for “grappling” when I joined the wresting class at the B.A.I. Birmingham Athletic Institute. I was tied up in knots literally!
At the age of 17 yrs., mainly to lose weight, I joined a local boxing club to train and thoroughly enjoyed it. I say that, as the first time I got “dumped on the floor” was a bit daunting to say the least as well as the shock. However, I became used to being hit which instilled me that in life you have to take the knocks occasionally, but by developing spirit and determination, the main thing is that to get back up off the floor and carry on. I also learned strategy and how to defend myself which is the main importance of Self Defence.
In 1970, when I was 20 years old, I joined the Armed Forces and served with the Royal Marines Commandos for 9 years. Whilst serving I quickly joined the Boxing team and represented both the Royal Marines and Royal Navy at heavyweight and later light heavyweight.
I then became a police officer in 1979 with the Devon and Cornwall police serving in both Devon and then moving to Newquay Cornwall in 1988 where I still live. In 1979 I began training in Plymouth with a local Bujinkai Karate Club which really gave my first real taste for martial arts.
When I moved to Newquay, I became interested In Taekwondo and joined a local “Dojang” – Training hall, to learn the art. In all honesty, I was not a natural, however, with spirit and determination I slowly became more coordinated, more confident, and competent in the Art thanks to my Instructors and fellow students.
From that time, I was always interested in martial arts/self-defence and one of my police roles was being a Training Sergeant and self-defence instructor.
In 2003 I became interested in Chinese martial arts when I joined a local training club initially to learn Tai Chi and Qigong. This was mainly to learn, understand and develop Internal Energy in order to enhance my external martial art training. I later started training in Wing Chun, Lau Gar and Oriental Weapons which actually enhanced my continued development in Taekwondo.
I personally wish to thank Master Bob Denny for his patience over the years and his help to become an Instructor in Chinese martial arts.
I retired from the police in 2004 after 25 1/2 years’ service where I re-joined the police as a civilian self-defence/first aid/law instructor.
I retired in November 2014 where I have concentrated my time teaching Tai Chi and Qigong and running my Taekwondo and Combo Martial Arts practice.
I became interested in internal energy and healing practices many years ago through my experience with Martial Arts. I wanted to learn and experience another dimension in order to maximise my own energy and self-healing capabilities.
Initially I learned and practised the art of Chi Kung (Qigong), which means “Vital Energy” and then about 13 years ago I started to learn the art of Tai Chi and further develop my Qigong practice.
Throughout the years I have gained much experience and later became an Advanced Instructor running my own schools in Cornwall.
I also became interested in treatment practices and using my energy positively in order to treat myself and others.
I then studied Reiki with Rodney Louis-Smith who took me for my Reiki Levels 1 and 2 and in 2009 I became a Reiki Master/Teacher.
I later became a Shiatsu practitioner and more recently in 2012/14 I studied Chinese Massage and acupressure with BSY and gained a diploma (Distinction) in Advanced Chinese Massage and Acupressure.
I am a Qualified Tai Chi and Qigong Instructor with the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain (TCUGB)
I am a member of the AHCP
(Association of Holistic Complementary Practitioners.)
I am now a Registered Black Belt Instructor member of I.M.A.S.A.
Independent Martial Arts and Sports Association.
Although I concentrate the majority of my time teaching
Tai Chi/ Qigong and Martial Arts I am also available to offer Holistic Therapy services. These services are very varied and can be given as individual treatments or as a combination. The main purpose of my practice is to maintain and maximise your overall health and wellbeing, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
